Satoshi Watanabe (May 26, 1910 – October 15, 1993) was a Japanese physicist and philosopher of science known for his work in quantum mechanics and information theory. He studied physics at the Imperial University of Tokyo and obtained his doctorate in Paris under Louis de Broglie. Watanabe introduced the Two-State Vector Formalism in quantum mechanics, proposing a second state vector that evolves backward in time. He also contributed to pattern recognition and the Ugly-Duckling Theorem. Watanabe later worked at the IBM Research Center in the USA after leaving Japan in 1950.
