Satyajit Ray was a renowned Bengali-Indian filmmaker born in Kolkata on May 2, 1921. He emerged from a family deep-rooted in literature and the arts. Ray studied at Presidency College and Visva-Bharati University. His filmmaking inspiration stemmed from his encounter with French director Jean Renoir and the Italian Neorealist film 'Ladri di biciclette'. Ray made his debut in 1955 with 'Pather Panchali', the first film of his Apu Trilogy, which won 11 major international awards. Throughout his career, he directed 37 films and was also an accomplished writer, designer, and musician.
