He co-founded the cybersecurity company Certicom and was instrumental in the development of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). Vanstone authored several significant research papers and books, held numerous patents, and received prestigious accolades, including the RSA Award for Excellence in Mathematics and the Ontario Premier's Catalyst Award. A member of the Royal Society of Canada and the International Association for Cryptologic Research, he passed away on March 2, 2014.
