Seán McCaughey was an Irish metalworker and member of the Irish Republican Army. Born on June 8, 1915, in Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, he joined the IRA at 18 and claimed to hold the rank of lieutenant general. McCaughey was the last of twelve IRA hunger strikers in the 1940s. In 1941, he was imprisoned in Port Laoise under harsh conditions, where he began a hunger strike on April 19, 1946. He died on May 11, 1946, after refusing food and water for 23 days and was buried in the Milltown Cemetery, Belfast.
