In the late 1970s to mid-1980s, he infiltrated the IRA as an informant for the Special Detective Unit of the Garda Síochána, helping combat the organization. After leaving the IRA, he voluntarily surrendered to British authorities for his actions as an IRA shooter. Post-release, he authored 'The Informer,' detailing his experiences in Irish republican paramilitarism. His revelations were controversial but recognized by some, including former Irish Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald, as significant.
