Murugathasan Varnakulasingham was a Sri Lankan Tamil who self-immolated on February 13, 2009, in Geneva to protest the treatment of Tamils by the Sri Lankan government. At age 26, he had been part of a larger movement where seven individuals sacrificed themselves in this manner. Varnakulasingham expressed his despair in a letter, stating that no help came despite years of pleas. His act of protest was supported by his family and remembered by the Tamil community in the UK.
