Selma Barkham, born Selma Huxley on March 8, 1927, in London, was a prominent Canadian historian known for her significant contributions to maritime history in both the Basque Country and Canada. Her research focused on the little-known Basque fisheries of cod and whale in Newfoundland during the 16th century, uncovering a Basque whaling industry in Labrador, including archaeological sites and the wreckage of Basque galleons. In 1981, she was awarded the Order of Canada for her pioneering work and brilliant contributions to Canadian history.
