Born in Kuzminka, he fought in the Great Patriotic War and graduated with honors from the Gorky Institute. He authored over 30 books, winning the Gorky Prize in 1987. Shurtakov's literary works were influential, and he generously donated his prize money to a war memorial in his hometown. His writings were also translated into Bengali, reflecting his impact beyond Russia.
