Semiha Berksoy was a pioneering Turkish opera singer and painter, born in Istanbul in 1910. She became the first Turkish woman to perform opera, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and later in Germany. She debuted in opera in 1934 and performed in Turkey, Germany, and Portugal. Berksoy was notable for her role in Strauss’s opera in 1939 and returned to Turkey in 1940, performing in works such as Madama Butterfly. She was awarded the title of State Artist in 1998 and passed away in 2004.
