He earned a candidacy in medical sciences in 1952 and was honored as a distinguished physician of the Armenian SSR in 1961. Mkrtchyan passed away on October 22, 1973, in Moscow, USSR and was buried in Yerevan. His contributions to public health and medicine established his reputation in the field of epidemiology, making him a significant figure in Armenian medical history.
