Seppo Toivonen is a retired Finnish lieutenant general born on July 24, 1957, in Kangasala. He graduated from Kangasala High School in 1976 and from the Cadet School in 1980. He was promoted to lieutenant general in 2014, succeeding Raimo Jyväsjärvi as the commander of the Army from 2014 to 2017. Toivonen also commanded a multinational battalion during the KFOR operation in Kosovo from 2009 to 2010, gaining invaluable international experience. He retired from active service on July 31, 2017.
