Serafim Pereira da Silva Neto was a Brazilian Romanist, Lusitanist, and classical philologist born on June 6, 1917, in Ilha do Governador. He was self-taught and published his first work at 19. He co-founded the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1942 and later became a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His research focused on vulgar Latin, Portuguese philology, and Brazilian Portuguese dialectology. Silva Neto was a founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Philology and passed away at the age of 43 in Rio de Janeiro on September 23, 1960.
