Sergei Adamovich Kovalev was a prominent Russian human rights activist, politician, and former Soviet dissident who was born on March 2, 1930, and passed away on August 9, 2021. He played a pivotal role in the human rights movement in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. Kovalev served as Russia's first Commissioner for Human Rights from 1994 to 1995 and co-authored the Russian Declaration of Human Rights and Civil Liberties in 1991. He was the head of the historical and educational human rights organization Memorial and led the Institute of Human Rights from 1996 until his death.
