Sergei Vasilievich Shestakov, born on November 23, 1934, in Leningrad, is a Soviet and Russian geneticist. He is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1987) and was elected as an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000). He holds a Doctor of Biological Sciences degree and serves as the head of the genetics department at Moscow State University. His expertise encompasses molecular and radiation genetics, biotechnology, and the genetic engineering of microorganisms, as well as the genetics of photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation processes.
