He holds the record for the youngest grandmaster ever, achieving the title at the age of 12 years and 7 months in 2003. Karjakin learned to play chess at the age of 5 and won the World Youth Chess Championship U-12 in 2001. He competed in the 2016 World Championship, where he lost against Magnus Carlsen.
