He graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1948 and began his specialty training in surgery at Ankara University. By 1952, he became a General Surgery Specialist and later prepared his associate professorship thesis in the United States. Akgün became an associate professor in 1958 and was promoted to professor in 1963. He was appointed as the rector of Ege University in 1982, serving until 1992, and led the Interuniversity Board from 1986 to 1987.
