Seymour Lester Shapiro (1916 - 1961) was a prominent organic chemist known for his innovative contributions to diabetes treatment through the development of Phenformin. Born in NYC, he graduated from Brooklyn College and served in the US Army as a toxicologist, receiving a Bronze Star. He published extensively in scientific journals and held numerous patents in organic chemistry. Despite his success in chemistry, he tragically developed diabetes and leukemia, passing away at the age of 45. The Seymour L. Shapiro Award in Organic Chemistry was established in his honor.
