James Earl 'Shag' Goolsby was an American football center born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1917. He attended Mississippi State University and played for the Bulldogs from 1937 to 1939. Selected by the Cleveland Rams in the 1940 NFL draft, he played eight games for the team that season. After retiring, he transitioned into education and coaching, serving in various roles in Mississippi schools, including athletic director and superintendent. Goolsby also served in the military during World War II. He passed away from a heart attack at the age of 57.
