Shaher Abu Shahout was a Jordanian officer who played a key role in establishing the Free Officers Movement in Jordan in 1951 and led it until 1957. He became the commander of the Royal Jordanian Artillery Corps in 1956 and led the Hashmi Brigade as a lieutenant colonel in 1957. After serving ten years in prison, he was released in 1964 and later led the Arab Liberation Front's military wing. He lived in Baghdad from 1970 to 1975, working for the Arab Ba'ath Party before suffering a stroke in 1978 that left him partially paralyzed until his death.
