Shamil Asgarov (1929 - May 20, 2005) was a Kurdish scholar, poet, and researcher known for his studies on the history of Kurds in Azerbaijan. He was a prominent leader of the Kurdish community in Kalbajar, where he founded and managed the Kurdish Museum. Asgarov was also the editor of the Kurdish newspaper Denge Kurd from 1991 to 2004 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Notably, he translated the classic Kurdish love story Mem and Zin into Azerbaijani and authored seventeen books, including a Kurdish-Azerbaijani dictionary published in 1999 with support from the Soros Foundation.
