She was born into a Punjabi Muslim Jat family and recorded over 6,000 songs in various languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Punjabi. She sang for 1,287 Hindi films and collaborated with renowned music directors like Naushad, Ghulam Haidar, Sachin Dev Burman, O.P. Nayyar, and C. Ramchandra. Her career spanned from the 1940s to the early 1970s, during which she delivered many popular songs that continue to be remixed today.
