He was notably an assistant musical director for the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and was nominated for Grammys twice. Cohen played the clarinet and violin as a child and served in the army during the Korean War. After attending Juilliard, he worked in NBC's music library and contributed to various musical projects, including Christmas specials and the Emmy Awards, and founded the New Horizon Singers.
