Sheng Yen (1931–2009) was a prominent Taiwanese Buddhist monk and scholar, recognized as a leading figure in Chan Buddhism. Born Zhang Baokang, he became a monk at 13 and eventually founded Dharma Drum Mountain, a major Buddhist organization in Taiwan. He was known for his modern approach to Buddhism, bridging traditional teachings with contemporary contexts. Sheng Yen also established meditation centers in the US and contributed to Buddhist education through various institutes. He emphasized compassionate action and the practice of meditation, leaving behind a significant legacy through his writings and teachings.
