He graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies with a focus on Mongolian Studies and was also known by the alias Glenn Miyashiro. Hasumi hailed from an intellectual family; he was the grandson of art historian Shigeyasu Hasumi and the son of literary critic Shigehiko Hasumi, with a Belgian mother.
