Merris Shirley Prendergast was a pioneering theater lighting designer born on June 15, 1929, who made history as the first African-American woman admitted to United Scenic Artists’ lighting division in 1969. In 1973, she became the first African-American woman lighting designer on Broadway. Throughout her impressive 50-year career, she designed lighting for various Broadway productions, including 'Waltz of the Stork', 'Amen Corner', and the notable Paul Robeson one-man show. Prendergast continued her work well into her mid-80s, with one of her final projects being 'Zora Neale Hurston: a Theatrical Biography' in 2016.
