Shōji Ōtomo, born on February 3, 1936, and deceased on January 27, 1973, was a Japanese editor, science fiction researcher, film critic, and translator, known by the nickname 'Kaiju Hakase' (Monster Doctor). He also used the pseudonym Ōtomo Hideshi. Ōtomo's real name was Toyoji Shishimoto, who later changed the reading of his name to Yoshimoto. His father was Hachirō Shishimoto, an international journalist, while his mother, Aiko Shishimoto, was a columnist and advocate for women's rights.
