After a postdoctoral stint at Cornell University, he led the Peptide Center at the Institute for Protein Research. Sakakibara founded the Peptide Institute, synthesizing biologically active peptides. He introduced liquid hydrogen fluoride in peptide synthesis and developed a novel solution-phase synthesis method for complex peptides. He has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to chemistry.
