Shun'ichi Akimoto (December 20, 1925 - July 14, 2004) was a prominent Japanese geophysicist and earth scientist. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1958 and served as a professor there. Recognized for his contributions to the understanding of seismic wave discontinuities in the Earth's mantle, he received the Japan Academy Prize in 1973. Akimoto was a member of the Japan Academy and was honored as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1997. He became Professor Emeritus in 1986 and later served as the director of the Okayama University Center for Earth Interior Research.
