He began his career as a disciple of the sixth generation San'yūtei Enshō, initially adopting the stage name San'yūtei Kōsei. He revered his mentor Enshō, often imitating his style, but faced disdain from him. Leaving Enshō's group during a division in the Rakugo Association, he became a disciple of the eighth-generation Hayashiya Shōzō, subsequently changing his name to Shunpūtei Ichiryū. Following Enshō's death, he published a controversial exposé but ultimately suffered from mental illness, leading to his tragic suicide on July 9, 1981.
