Simon Karas (1905-1999) was a prominent Greek musician specializing in Byzantine music. Throughout his life, he focused on collecting musical manuscripts from Greek folklore and Byzantine music, while also conducting research on the principles of Byzantine chant and its notation. He is recognized as a significant figure among Byzantine chanters and music teachers and contributed to the lack of unification in Byzantine music principles. His theories, influenced by Western music, received both support and criticism. Some of his students became renowned chanters, including Lycurgus Angelopoulos.
