Simon van der Meer was a Dutch physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1984, shared with Italian physicist Carlo Rubbia. He is known for developing a method to cool proton accelerators and participated in the discovery of the W and Z bosons at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). At that time, CERN had an acceleration capability of 500 giga-electron volts. He worked at Philips after his electrical engineering studies until 1956 before joining CERN, where he retired in 1990.
