Simone Jortay-Lemaire was a Belgian politician and Ecolo's first female parliamentarian. Born on February 27, 1929, in Verviers, she was noted for her social activism, establishing one of the first social centers for immigrants in 1962. She supported family planning and created a guidance center for drug addicts and troubled youth. She was a founding member of Ecolo in Charleroi and served as a senator from 1981 until her accidental death on September 29, 1984, paving the way for future female political activists.
