Sir John Wellesley Gunston, 3rd Baronet, born in July 1962, is known for his significant contributions as a war photojournalist during the 1980s Afghan conflict. He initially served in the British South African Police before attending Sandhurst and commissioning into the Irish Guards. Gunston made over 25 trips into Afghanistan, capturing the war between Soviet forces and mujahidin groups. Notably, he was the only journalist to accompany Ahmad Shah Massoud during a Soviet operation. Aside from journalism, he co-founded a documentary company and the Rory Peck Trust, advising Afghan leaders post-9/11.
