Sjoerd Span was a farmer and the founder of competitive pole vaulting in Friesland, Netherlands. He collaborated with Lykle Miedema between 1956 and 1959 to establish this sport, leading to the formation of the Frisian Pole Vaulter Association (FLB) in 1960. Span served as chairman of the FLK and FLB from 1957 to 1975 and continued as a board member until 1981. He was also active in bird conservation, leading the Frisian Birdwatchers Association, and participated in regional politics as a member of the FNP.
