Smangaliso Mkhatshwa is a South African priest and politician, born on June 26, 1939, in Barberton, Mpumalanga. He served as the Executive Mayor of Tshwane from 2000 to 2006 and is a member of the African National Congress (ANC). An anti-apartheid activist, he was politically persecuted and imprisoned. Mkhatshwa has held significant roles in the Catholic Church and was the Secretary-General of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference. He was also South Africa's Minister of Education from 1996 to 1999 and the first president of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa.
