He became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR in 1962 and served as the director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics from 1962 to 1968 and then headed the Physical Technical Institute from 1968 until his death in 1988. Azimov was instrumental in the construction of a unique 1 megawatt solar furnace in Uzbekistan and was awarded the State Prize of the Uzbek SSR named after Biruni in 1970.
