Sōichi Aikawa was a Japanese politician born on September 13, 1942, in Urawa-ku and passed away on January 25, 2021, in Saitama. He was the first mayor of Saitama, serving from 2001 to 2009. Aikawa graduated from Keio University in 1965. Prior to becoming mayor, he was a member of the Saitama Prefectural Assembly from October 1980 to April 1991 and mayor of Urawa from March 1991 to April 2001. He lost the mayoral election in 2009 to Hayato Shimizu, who was supported by the Democratic Party.
