Soliman Gamil, born in December 1924 in Alexandria, is an Egyptian composer and musician. He studied Arabic music and played the qanun at the Institute of Arabic Music in Cairo from 1940 to 1945. From 1945 to 1950, he learned piano, double bass, and music arranging under Italian professor Minato Campizi. In 1950, he went to Paris for a year to study music composition. Gamil has conducted extensive research in Pharaonic music and established an orchestra for Egyptian folk music. He has composed many scores for documentary films, notably for Kamal el-Telmissany's films about Mamluk Cairo.
