Vice Admiral Sir Somerford Francis Teagle, born on June 9, 1938, in Lower Hutt, is a retired senior officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy. He served as Chief of Naval Staff from 1989 to 1991 and as Chief of Defence Force from 1991 until 1995. Teagle is known for abolishing the rum ration in the RNZN in 1990. His honors include the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and being appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1994.
