He became the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honor, awarded posthumously after his death on November 3, 1947. Sharma served in the 19 Hyderabad Battalion and fought during the Arakan Campaign in World War II. He was involved in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–48, where he made the ultimate sacrifice while defending Srinagar against infiltrators, demonstrating extraordinary courage and dedication that earned him the prestigious award.
