Sonallah Ibrahim, born on February 24, 1937, in Cairo, is an Egyptian novelist known for his leftist ideology and is considered a controversial figure. He gained notoriety especially after refusing to accept the Cairo Arab Novel Forum award in 2003, which is awarded by the Supreme Council of Culture. Ibrahim was imprisoned for over five years from 1959 to 1964 during a campaign led by Gamal Abdel Nasser against leftist groups.
