Sonia Gandhi, born on December 9, 1946, is an Indian politician and the President of the Indian National Congress. Initially born as Sonia Maino in Italy, she married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 and moved to India. After the assassination of her husband in 1991, she faced pressure to enter politics but initially refused. She became the leader of the Congress Party in 1998 and won a parliamentary seat in 1999. Her leadership was significant in bringing the party back to power in the 2004 elections, although she declined the position of Prime Minister.
