Sonia Machanick (June 15, 1925 - November 12, 1977) was a South African physician, author, and specialist in educational psychology. She developed innovative methods for teaching children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. She founded the Japari School in Johannesburg, a private school aimed at providing education to these children. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she wrote a series of four widely used books on phonics-based reading instruction, as well as articles addressing the needs of children with learning difficulties.
