Charles 'Specs' Wright was an American jazz drummer born on September 8, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played in a US Army band until 1947 and then became a member of groups led by saxophonist Jimmy Heath and trumpeter Howard McGhee. In 1949, he joined the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and played on John Coltrane's first commercial recordings. Over the 1950s, he collaborated with numerous notable musicians, including Earl Bostic, Kenny Drew Sr., Cannonball Adderley, and Carmen McRae. He was involved in several significant jazz recordings and projects until his death on February 6, 1963.
