Spyros Galinos was a prominent Greek politician, serving as Mayor of Lesbos from May 2014 to September 2019. Born in Athens in March 1952, he grew up in Mytilene. He had a long political career, becoming a City Councillor and later a prefectural councillor. Elected to the Greek Parliament in 2009, he co-founded the Independent Greeks party in 2012 after leaving the New Democracy party. Galinos was known for his humanitarian work, earning the Olof Palme Prize in 2016. He passed away from cancer on December 23, 2022, at the age of 70.
