John Lee 'Squint' Phares was an American professional basketball player born on December 31, 1915. He played college sports, excelling in basketball, baseball, and football at West Virginia University. Phares participated in the National Basketball League as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 1938–39 season, where he averaged 6.9 points per game. After retiring from professional basketball, he devoted his efforts to running a nursery school with his wife in Columbus, Ohio, until his passing on August 16, 1974.
