Stan Getz (February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist known professionally as Stan Getz. He primarily played the tenor saxophone and was known as 'The Sound' due to his warm, lyrical tone. His greatest inspiration was the soft timbre of Lester Young. Getz rose to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band. Critic Scott Yanow described him as one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of all time. He played in bebop and cool jazz groups and popularized the bossa nova genre in America with the hit single 'The Girl from Ipanema' (1964).
