Stan Openshaw (1946-2022) was a British geographer and professor of human geography at the University of Leeds. After spending 18 years at Newcastle University, he focused on computer-based geography to enhance research automation and reduce subjectivity. He founded the Centre for Computational Geography in 1992, emphasizing interdisciplinary use of technology for solving complex geographic problems. A fellow of several esteemed societies, Openshaw directed the CCG until his stroke in 1999, which hindered his communication. His contributions were celebrated at a 2012 GISRUK conference.
