He served as the director of the Siberian Research Institute of Horticulture from 1990 to 2002 and was an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in Science and Technology in 1981 and recognized as an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation in 1998. Khabarov significantly contributed to the study and development of fruit and berry crops.
