He began his service in the Soviet Ground Forces in 1948 and held several key positions, including Commander of the North Caucasus Military District, Baltic Military District, and Trans-Baikal Military District. He served as the First Deputy Commander of Soviet Ground Forces and led the Western Direction. Following the disbandment of the Western Direction in 1992, he retired from military service. Reports suggest he passed away in 2012 and was buried at Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
